Hello,

My 3rd Great Grandfather is Jochum Jans Medema.  Based on this record https://www.openarch.nl/gra:29bc00aa-7c75-1d1d-9cc3-306c46153ad2, his father did not have the last name Medema.

Can you tell me how the last name Medema was introduced to this family?  Why would Jochum Jans Medema start using this name?

Suggestie: Jochum Medema - geboren in Uithuizermeeden.

Perfectly correct. He could also have taken his name from Meeden (in another part of the province) but here it was clearly Uithuizermeeden that was meant.

There are a LOT of Medema's, people chose this name long before Napoleon decreed that surnames would be obligatory (in 1811), and quite often you could find out without much trouble which "Meeden" they took their name from. But as Mr. Karssenberg said, Jochum was born in Uithuizermeeden, so that's slam dunk.
Also, you won't be related to many of them -- the name was chosen over and over again by people who had nothing to do with each other.

The following quote confirms, that the name Medema is derived either from the place Meeden or Uithuizermeeden:

• Mede 'hooiland', en al in de 18e (eeuw) van Meeden, Oldambt, en Uithuizermeeden [Miedema-1965, p 30].

• Pieter Pieters nam in 1812 te Ezinge (Gr.) voor zichzelf en zijn kinderen de familienaam Miedema aan; vervolgens werd echter de naamsvorm Medema de officiële familienaam [Informant: H. Medema te Bilthoven (hmedema@introweb.nl), 11-3-2002].

In addition to the places Meeden and Uithuizermeeden, there are regions in Groningen with the name meeden: Feerwerder meeden, Sauwerder meeden, etc.

@ JHM: als je M*dema intypt in AlleGroningers krijg je zo'n 9400 hits. Dat is dan Medema, Miedema, Mijdema en ook namen als Mandema, maar in elk geval: het zijn er véél. (Vind ik dan.) Ook voor 1811 verscheidene tientallen -- zelf ben ik bezig met pre-1811 doopsgezinde Miedema's (ook: Medendorp, Miedendorp) die uiteraard niet vaak in de doopboeken verschijnen en dus niet eens meegeteld worden.

Overigens gaf ik hierboven niet aan dat véél mensen zich voor 1811 al zo noemden; ik zei dat ze het lang tevoren ook al deden.

Look on Family Search catalog- civil registration - filmnumber 00473 9275 Huwelijkse bijlagen 1812-1833, scans 1082 - 1091.. 

Huwelijkse bijlagen are papers tot mariage act. of  29 november 1819 actnumber 18

The clark of the county office needed those papers before he is allowd to write the actand  before he is allowed to marry the couple. 

The first thing he asked  young couple  two  papers of birth, and in your case there are also papers form the death of his first wife. 

 This first announcement to the marriage is mininum of 14 days.

 By no objection he may marry the couple 14 days later.

Now the your last name.

When Napoleon  took over the gouverment of Holland in mars 1811., He declared that we should live confirm te French laws. 

In Frane everone had already a last name.

In the province Holland  8man  from 10 man carried a last name, but the province Groningen only  two out of ten carried a last name. 

There were many people who had take a last name.

He was  born en baptized in the place Uithuizermeeden (mede means greenland good for hay.). So he took in 1811 the last part of the town Uithuizermeden ---->. Medema.
