By the way, is Broos short for Ambrosius? I have seen patronymics with Brosius as well.
Yes, it is.
Hello Steve,
In your post yesterday at 01:28 (last updated yesterday — 02:44) you stated burial dates for children of Ambrosius. In fact these are impost records. The impost is a tax levied in the province of Holland, Zeeland and West-Friesland on burials and marriages. The date of payment of the impost was in between the death date and the burial date. Theoretically they can all have occurred on one day. Usually there is about three days difference between death an burial dates. It is worth noting which amount was payed, which is an indication of the economic class the family lived in. There were five classes: 30 guilders, 15 guilders, 6 guilders, 3 guilders and free (pro deo). The taxes were levied between 1695 and 1805.
More than 50% of the population lived in the pro deo class. Unmarried people payed a double fee when buried.
People were fined when buried in another municipality than the one they lived in.

Interesting! I am a descendent of Jan. p.s. Steve, i like close to the archive in Alkmaar, if we come across something which is only found there, i can help.
"One thing I have noticed with most of the records (DTB, Notarial, etc.,) in Nieuwe Niedorp is the time gaps. Unsure what happened. This family is going to be a challenge. Again, my thanks for your helpful insights. "
unfortunatly alot of RK records have that. You could use the court marriage registers or look in the impost (tax) registers for the impost on marriages.
I looked in the court marriages of Nieuwe-Niedorp, sadly i couldnt find a Broos/ Ambrosius. Possibly his wife was from another villiage and they married there.
Hi Jasper: Nice to meet a fellow descendant.
Were you able find a begraven impost Sijmon, Jan or their sister?
I am looking now in the impostregisters of Nieuwe Niedorp. sadly there is a huge hiatus between 1734-1760. I have checked from 1780-1795 and havent found any of them.
I was hoping that between 1733 and 1734 there would be a burial of. widow of Broos Sijmonsz., sadly i didnt find that.
There are also impostregisters of the villiage of Oude-Niedorp, which is also close to Zijdewind. Sadly also huge hiatusses.
Could you maybe take a look at that register?
gr. Jasper
I'll be happy to scroll through the registers. :)
Went through the registers again, and didn't turn anything useful up about Brosius Sijmon's wife. You're right: a huge hiatus of years missing, not only in the DTB registers, but also in the Notarial Archiefs.
The reason for the missing DTB, Antoon Freeker states in his 1991 book about the Freeker family, is a fire which happened in the church of Oude-Niedorp. There was a fire in the reformed church in 1977, although i dont think that was the fire which destroyed the RK DTB.
Although i am pretty sure that Broos Sijmonsz. is the person we are searching for, i would like to know 100%. The notarial and oud recht archives of Nieuwe-Niedorp are located in Alkmaar, the notarial archive of Oude-Niedorp is located in Haarlem.
gr. Jasper.
Hi Jasper:
Thank you for your very informative post. At least the mystery behind the gap in records makes complete sense. Like you, I want to ensure the filiation of our mutual ancestor. When time permits, I'll look through the Haarlem records. I think some of Notarial Archives are indexed (but not all). At least there's a remote chance of finding some sort of an answer. I have been surprised by finds on my ancestors in their records. Incidentally, my late father was born in Haarlem in 1930.
Again, I deeply appreciate the historical perspective on the missing records. It seems like that was fate for adjacent communities close to the Oude-Niedorp and Nieuwe-Niedorp area.
Regards and the search continues,
Steve
